Timothy M. Sweeney

Tim was elected to the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts Board in 2012.  He was elected board vice chair in 2020. As a director, Tim helps set the company’s strategy and overall direction. Within a highly competitive and highly regulated business environment, the board oversees and governs BCBSMA's operations, which includes the provision of health coverage to individuals and public and private employers. Tim serves as chair of the board’s human resources committee and is a member of the finance and business performance committee. 

Tim is president, Liberty Mutual, responsible for all three of the company’s business units: Global Specialty Markets, Global Retail Markets and Liberty Mutual Investments. In previous leadership roles at Liberty Mutual, Tim served as president, Global Retail Markets and president, U.S. Personal Insurance.

Over his 28-year career with the company, he has led distribution and product management in the small commercial independent agency segment, overseen numerous successful insurance company acquisition and integration efforts, and led the distribution, marketing, digital and customer service organizations for Liberty’s U.S. personal lines business unit.

Tim serves on the board of directors of the Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Foundation, Inc., and the Mass General Hospital annual gala to benefit children and young adults on the autism spectrum. Tim also serves on the executive committee of the board of the Massachusetts Business Roundtable.  He is a prior director of Insurance.com in Cleveland, Ohio and of the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety in Washington D.C.

Tim holds a Bachelor of Arts in economics from Harvard University and an MBA from Harvard Business School.
