BLUE CROSS BLUE SHIELD OF MASSACHUSETTS ISSUES STATEMENT REGARDING PROPOSED TRANSITION OF FIVE STEWARD HEALTH CARE HOSPITALS

BOSTON – August 16, 2024 In response to today's announcement from the Healey Administration on the proposed transition plan of five Steward Health Care hospitals (Saint Anne’s Hospital, Saint Elizabeth’s Medical Center, Good Samaritan Medical Center, the Holy Family Hospitals and Morton Hospital), Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts (“Blue Cross”) released the following statement:

“Our highest priority is to ensure that our members who receive care at these hospitals continue to have timely access to the care they need, when they need. We’ve set up a dedicated team within Blue Cross consisting of clinicians and service representatives who are focused on the thousands of our members who get care from a Steward physician or at a Steward hospital. In recent weeks, our team has reached out to help and support members who use Carney Hospital and Nashoba Valley Medical Center to ensure there are no access to care issues after those hospitals close at the end of the month.

“We will continue to monitor developments including next week’s bankruptcy court hearing and will look forward to working with the hospitals’ new owners if and when the acquisitions are approved.

“Finally, we applaud the efforts by the Healey Administration and others over the past several months to ensure that these long-standing, local hospitals remain open and can continue to serve patients in their communities.”
